In the 1830s, machine-made carpeting became widely available and people began to favor rugs and carpets on their floors. At the same time, the introduction of machine-made yard goods reduced the cost of material and provided a source of leftover scraps and rags. Thrifty homemakers put these scraps to use by braiding them into small mats for hearth and bedside. Join us at the California Trail Center to make your own braided rug for your home.
